Prerequisite: College level management training and two years experience working in the securities industry is recommended but not required.

This seminar is designed for people with some understanding of the securities industry but who wish to understand more about the entire industry and the key trends that are driving the industry. This course was created for several large industry participants who wanted to ensure their key staff understood how the various parts of the industry work together and how recent industry events will shape the financial markets in the next years.

The seminar will cover the roles of the major players in the securities business, including banks, broker/dealers, mutual funds, and the issuers of securities; the customers and their needs; how some of the primary alternative investments work; and the impact of recent financial events.

  • How the securities process works in the US
  • How the various industry participants work together to deliver new issues and to process existing securities
  • How the unique instruments causing the most processing concern, including CDOs, are structured and processed
  • How systems are changing to meet the demands of the new instruments and increasingly sophisticated investors
  • How to understand and address the emerging challenges to market participants in the current environment

The program features a special update on the U.S. financial crisis, including an overview of leading positions and perspectives on how to address the issue, and the prospects for action by the Federal Reserve, Congress and private participants.

After completing this program, participants should be able to:

  •  Explain the underwriting process for creating and issuing new securities
  •  Identify the trust and agency services provided by banks
  •  Explain the securities transaction lifecycle
